World Menopause Day Media Briefing October 9, 2007

An invitation from Professor Amos Pines, President of the International Menopause Society...
A few years ago, the International Menopause Society, in collaboration with the World Health Organisation, designated October 18th as World Menopause Day. The celebration of this day around the world symbolises a unity among women, sharing the same experience of menopause, and provides an opportunity to spotlight this very important medico-social issue. As we approach World Menopause Day 2007 it seems timely to assess current attitudes towards the menopause and approaches to treating its distressing symptoms. We, at the IMS, feel that the risks of the most effective treatment - hormone replacement therapy (HRT) - have often been greatly exaggerated, particularly for women initiating HRT around menopause. Specific trials have been widely publicised which started HRT in elderly postmenopausal women many years after menopause. In this respect we feel that they could not approriately evaluate the potential benefits for HRT in younger menopausal women - the population who mostly use it.

7th Novo Nordisk International Symposium September 8, 2007

The aim of the 7th International HRT symposium is to review and discuss the role of the progestogen in systemic treatment. The key focus lays on the results from CHOICE trial, specifically on the significance of the ultra low dose data in light of current developments. A separate session will focus on oestrogen deficiency and local treatment options. It is therefore our intention to provide an interactive forum for leading physicians across the world to review the facts and exchange ideas on the significance of systemic and local hormone replacement therapy.

Today, the Amsterdam Menopause Symposium sees the meeting of around 1000 experts and professionals with a well-established programme.
